SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve has received a nearly 350 thousand dollar grant from NOAA’s Office of Coastal Management.
The grant will fund an archeological and cultural survey of 10.9 acres at the western end of Wisconsin Point to create a restoration design for that historic land.
The plan will protect rare sand dunes by the removal and consolidation of roads and pathways and restoring native vegetation to increase the natural habitat.
The project team expects the restoration and recreation management will reduce the off-roading, illegal dumping and vandalism that occurs at the site.
The information that is collected over the next year will be integrated into construction documents and plans for that portion of Wisconsin Point.
